The hardest part of martial arts is walking through the door the first time. Most people who call us have never trained, and most parents have never watched a jiu-jitsu class. So here is exactly what happens at your first class at Guerra's House of Warriors, from booking to the drive home.
Pick the right class
Every class runs Monday to Thursday, and each one is grouped by age:
- Kids, ages 4 to 7: 5:00 to 5:50 PM
- Kids, ages 8 to 10: 6:00 to 6:50 PM
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, ages 11 and up: 7:00 to 7:50 PM
- MMA Kickboxing, ages 11 and up: 8:00 to 9:00 PM
Teens and adults train together, so if you have a kid who is 11 or older, you can come in on the same night and try it side by side. Booking takes about a minute online: tell us who is training and pick a time that suits you.
Getting here
We are at 206 E House St in Alvin, in the shopping center near the movie theater. Park right out front. The gym is closed Friday to Sunday, so plan on a weeknight.
What to wear
Clothes you can move in. That is it. You do not need a uniform, gloves or any gear to try a class. Anything you need after that, coach will tell you once your first class is done.
You do not need experience
Most people start with none. Coach breaks every technique down so complete beginners and experienced students get better in the same room. Worried you are too old or out of shape? One of our members started at 62, a retired Texas State Trooper, and put on muscle in her first few weeks. You train at your level and build from there.
What happens on the mat
Coach Guerra watches how you move and starts you at your level. He corrects technique from the very first class, even in the 4 to 7 group, because practice makes permanent. Safety comes first in every drill: control is taught from day one, and technique is fixed before anyone goes harder.
It is real training, so expect to work. Nobody is going to throw you in the deep end on day one, and nobody is going to hand you anything you have not earned either.
For parents
You are welcome to watch from the side. Once your child steps on the mat, coach needs their full attention, so we ask parents to let coach do the coaching. That one surprises people. As one mom of two boys who have trained here for four years put it, you have to fully trust the process and the coach. The little ones train in a small group, about 7 to 10 kids in the 4 to 7 class, so coach can correct every child in every class.
After class
When class is over, the head coach sits down with you, or with the parents for a child, and goes over programs and pricing. No pressure and no hard sell. You train first, then decide.
